DISCOVERY – LP

Discovery's 'LP'

Its easy to be jealous person. What can I say? I’m only human. So, it really warms the cockles of my heart to find that real gem, that twinkle and shine through the brown hues of packing envelopes and scotch tape in my mailbox. This week, that CD was a debut LP (called ‘LP’) from the collab project named Discovery by its members, Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles from Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, respectively.

Rostam Batmanglij & Wes Miles of Discovery show off their dangerous side.

Discovery is what happens to the Top 40 R&B Single formula when you inject it with airy and bouncy synth-pop sensibilities (synthabilities??). Add in Batmanglij’s friendly, summertime vocals and the deep-house bass beats of 808′s and handclaps – It is a fusion (some might call it unholy), to be sure, much in the same way that the original Vampire Weekend was a fusion of preppy-pop and afro-influenced rhythms.

It’s romantic, yearning – lustful, at times, in that ironical self-conscious way that has characterized groups such as Chromeo, yet it is still able to maintain a synth induced reverie that makes this album perfect for the summertime months. Give it a listen. Give it several listens! And be sure to keep an ear to KZSC this upcoming week to hear more from this fantastic album.

Check out one of my favorite tracks from the album – one which I believe perfectly encapsulates the fusion of the toe-tapping vox of an R&B hit, the thoughtful, lifting, synthpop, and Batmanglij’s smooth summertime crooning:
