Review – Moby “Destroyed”

What I wanted this album to feel like.

Perhaps if I was currently “destroyed”, this pensive and slow album would piece me back together, heal my soul. However, I am not destroyed, the Santa Cruz weather gods are almost ready to kick us into summer, and I want to dance.

Moby’s “Destroyed” is moody, chilled and quite frankly a little boring. It’s ambient but not the type of ambient that has you believing you’re in another world, on one of Neptune’s moons, bouncing around extra high due to low-gravitational pull. Nah, this ambient is plain and terrestrial.

One highlight is the track “The Right Thing,” a little funky, really easy-going. It sounds like it could be the background music of one of the more emotional scenes of Boogie Nights.

The photo book included in album sleeve has shots from some of Moby’s gigs, him in front of an ocean of waving arms. That’s what I want to and expect to hear from Moby, the stuff that gets him filling stadiums. I guess I’ll have to wait until his next album.
