I feel like the fall and winter seasons are when my favorite bands come out with new albums for which to bleed my ears with. Which is why I cannot WAIT for summer to end. So, without further ado, here are the upcoming albums that I will headbang and air drum to over and over and over and over and over…
5. DREAM THEATER – A Dramatic Turn of Event
Now that they’ve lost Mike Portnoy, one of the best drummer out there, I’m really interested to see what kind of direction Dream Theater goes in. Can Mike Mangini take up the mantle that Portnoy left behind? Will Petrucci give Mangini the same workload as he did for Portnoy? There’s only one way to find out: listen to their new album, which comes out September 13th. Which, by the way, is 4 days before my birthday, if anyone wants to get me an early birthday present…

4. TRIVIUM – In Waves
Many people both criticize and applaud Trivium for their obvious references to Metallica. While I like Metallica (their old stuff anyway), I feel like Trivium needs to shake off the “Metallica’s grandchild” logo and create their own style of music. From what I’ve heard, this album definitely sounds like they’re heading in the right direction. I enjoyed their single (which is linked below) and can’t wait to listen to the entirety of the album. Their newest album is available on August 9th.

3. LEPROUS – Bilateral
This is the newest band that I’m the most excited about. Leprous, basically a teenage version of Opeth, has only one album out, which is why I’m a little hesitant to be too excited, but screw it. I’m excited. I mean, just look at that album cover. It’s got surrealism written all over it. Jeff Jordan, the guy that makes The Mars Volta’s album covers, has outdone himself. AND it’s being mixed by the masterful Jens Borgen (Opeth, Devin Townshend Project, etc). As you can tell, I’m a little hyped up about this album…so it better not disappoint. Bilateral will be revealed to all on August 23rd. Or if you’re one of those damn Europeans, then it comes out August 22nd.
P.S. Their newest single, Resltess, is streaming on their Facebook page, but you have to like it in order to listen to it. I know, so much work. Just listen. It’s good. I promise. Restless
2. MASTODON – The Hunter
Awwwwww yeeeeeah. Mastodon, one of my favorite bands OF ALL TIME, is releasing their newest album September 26th, and its promising to be heavier than any of their other albums out there. After all, what’s more metal than fire, puppets, and Mr. Rogers? Don’t know what I’m talking about? Once you’ve prepared yourself, watch the video below and you will see the metalest video in the history of metal. Oh and that song isn’t off The hunter, but actually an unreleased track from Crack the Skye that Mastodon made specifically for Adult Swim. Pretty badass if you ask me. Thanks to my fellow colleague DJ Colossus for showing me this.

1. OPETH – Heritage
Finally, after 3 years of the most bröötal waiting I’ve ever endured, Opeth is releasing a new album. And honestly, I’m not sure why, but I’m a little worried about the album. The fact that there are only clean vocals and it doesn’t Martin Lopez makes me tentative. But I have the utmost faith in Akerfeldt. They have yet to make a bad album, and I doubt they’ll start now. And after listening to their newest single, “The Devil’s Orchard”, my doubts are beginning to disperse. The song is one of the most jazzy I’ve heard from them, and I hate to admit it, but Axenrot sounds pretty damn good. You can listen to it here: The Devil’s Orchard Heritage will come out September 20th which is, you guessed it, 3 days after my birthday! If anyone wants to get me a late birthday gift, I think you know what to do.

4. TRIVIUM
