Until recently, I had been happily living in a smaller world of words. Then, a new word entered my brain. A word which has perplexed my bothered mind. But then, I played the dichotomy gambit; it must be halfway between, fact & fiction. Ah yes, that’s it, something made-up that, through usage, becomes real. I realized that we, of this modern world, all live with, the artificial & made-up. It’s the truth about advertizing. It’s how any generation names the musical moments of their time in history. Lofty heights & platitudes aside, brass tacks are what we’re after here. A music librarian, works in a room full of the factitious; the music genre names! Some of these genre names are toxic to the system of how you archive music. The library can become a dark maze of blind alleys & dead ends. This is why, KZSC no longer has a “miscellaneous non-rock” section, nor do we have an “easy-listening” section. Just look up Rock Music on Wikipedia & you will behold an awesome artifice of factitious words & phrases; even if it’s a lovely list & quite educational, it proves the point I’m trying to make.
By the way, my favorite factitious word is, ABSQUATULATE, but you’ll need a copy of the Oxford English Dictionary to find out what it means.
