Iris Dement, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, guitar and keyboard player, will be performing on Sunday September 11, 2011 at 7:30pm at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320-2 Cedar St., Santa Cruz, CA (831) 479-9421. Her earlier recordings in the folk/country genre were introspective, personal, and spare in presentation, and received great acclaim for her songwriting. Iris’s later recordings are broader in scope, including some songs with a more contemporary feel, with themes concerning sexual abuse, religion and government policy along with less political songs about family. Iris has also performed on the the movie soundtracks of “Songcatcher” and the 2010 version of “True Grit.” Check the accompanying video of Iris singing one of her songs with Emmylou Harris harmonizing with her.
