From chilly Minnesota comes Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton to the Backstage Lounge (next to the Rio Theatre) in Santa Cruz, CA on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 8:30pm. A true master of the much maligned squeeze box, Dan’s repertoire covers a wide swath of original and traditional material, including influences of Gypsy Swing, French Musette, Cajun, Jug Band, Tex-Mex and the Cumbia, A frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” Dan’s shows feature not only his brilliant accordion work, but his humor and songs in a dizzying variety of musical genres. He also performs with a larger band, the CafĂ© Accordion Orchestra, but on this visit is appearing solo in an intimate venue.
