From chilly Minnesota comes Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton to the Backstage Lounge (next to the Rio Theatre) in Santa Cruz, CA on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 8:30pm. A true master of the much maligned squeeze box, Dan’s repertoire covers a wide swath of original and traditional material, including influences of Gypsy Swing, French Musette, Cajun, Jug Band, Tex-Mex and the Cumbia, A frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” Dan’s shows feature not only his brilliant accordion work, but his humor and songs in a dizzying variety of musical genres. He also performs with a larger band, the Café Accordion Orchestra, but on this visit is appearing solo in an intimate venue.
World-renowned poet, writer and activist Nikki Giovanni will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation. Still committed to the struggle for civil rights and equality today, her talk will cover “The Privilege of Serving: Art and the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr”. The event takes place Thursday, February 2nd at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public with doors opening at 6:30 pm.
