Historic Ballroom: Cocoanut Grove reinvention!

The Coconut Grove Ballroom is a historic landmark that was created in 1907 by  Santa Cruz native William H. Weeks. Located right next to The Boardwalk with a perfect view of the ocean and pier, the Coconut Grove has recently been re-awakened with bustling activity. Although the structure may be 104 years old, what’s going on inside is a fairly new music scene, hosting great indie acts such as Mazzy Star on April 10th and M. Ward on April 12th.

The Grove recently had the San Francisco band GIRLS  perform on March 1st. The crowd consisted of a couple hundred fans and the energy was great. The show’s opening acts started with The She’s, an all-girl band from San Francisco and were followed by Unknown Mortal Orchestra, a small indie band from New Zeland. Girls followed UMO and started their set with a mellow vibe but ended on a high note with crowd-pleasing songs that kept everybody dancing. Before leaving The Grove, the band came out to do an encore of 2 songs.

The Coconut Grove Ballroom is trying to create an environment that supports artists and their music. It has an intimate show setting but is also able to hold a couple hundred people. This welcoming venue is the perfect place to go to a concert, go to a show and help keep the ballroom alive! Come and support this Santa Cruz venue and the artists that visit it.
