Crossing any imagined boundaries between gospel, country, pop and soul music, he wasn’t called “The Genius” for nothing. Ray Charles’ impact on music still reverberates today. Fronted by vocalists Tony Lindsay of Santana, Glenn Walters from the HooDoo Rhythm Devils and legendary bay area keyboardist/vocalist Clifford Coulter, The Ray Charles Project pays perfect homage to his talent as a singer, songwriter and performer. They are expertly backed by an all-star rhythm section including Hammond B-3 wizard Dave Mathews. A better collection of blues and jazz performers to honor Charles’ legacy would be hard to find. The Ray Charles Project comes to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in downtown Santa Cruz Thursday, June 7th. Showtime is 7 pm.
