Programmer of the Month: David Anton Savage

In the fall of 1989, Unfiltered Camels was born on the airwaves of The Great 88.  The Middle Eastern and North African music show was run by a few DJs when towards the end of 1998, it was announced that it would be taken off the air. An avid fan of the program, David Anton Savage came to its rescue and began volunteering at KZSC. Shortly after, he took the broadcasting class and was the host of Unfiltered Camels by the summer of 1999, and continues to host the program today.

Additionally, in 2007, David began a program specifically for the summer schedule known as The Savage Bistro. This program combines spoken word as well as relevant tracks that are all based on a concept, rather than a particular genre of music. David writes, “I came to believe that the spoken word is a beautiful form of punctuation within the musical sentences of a given set. I have come to image active listeners……the body is slightly titled toward the radio, an ear is turned a bit closer to the stereo, a hand is reaching out to place fingertips on the volume control…… or maybe just a glance at blue numbers in the dark.”

Both shows are on our summer schedule; Unfiltered Camels is on Mondays from 3 to 6 pm, and The Savage Bistro is on Tuesdays from 10 pm to midnight. Keep it locked on 88.1 FM to catch both shows in their savagery while you can…the summer schedule as well as the Savage Bistro will only remain until October 14th.

Loud Rock: The First Headbang of September

This week in new metal features the stripped down version of Katatonia’s release from last year Dead End Kings. It’s more acoustic and mellow than their past releases, which is saying something since they’re usually pretty chillaxed.

Other releases include the theatrical Gwar and the tool-esque Gemini Syndrome.

88.1 FM Goes Dark

Friday, September 20th is going to be a dark day at 88.1 FM. One day after this month’s full moon, KZSC will be turning off our broadcast signal starting at 7 AM. UC Santa Cruz is doing some electrical work at our tower site and so we don’t cook someone like a Thanksgiving turkey, we’ll be off until around 2 PM. Webstream listeners: you’ll still have The Great 88 as company during the outage. Thanks for missing us; we’ll return to the airwaves as fast as we can September 20th  ’cause we miss you too!

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Float Along and Fill Their Lungs with the Sounds of Space

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are a seven-piece psychedelic rock group from Victoria, Australia, whose previous albums (including 2012′s garagey/surfy psych rock jam sesh 12 Bar Bruise and this year’s Morricone-and-Jodorowsky-telling-stories-by-the-campfire mini-opus Eyes Like the Sky) rocked harder than an alligator with sweet shades shredding a guitar surfing through a black hole, are back with a new record, titled Float Along – Fill Your Lungs. The album is a 21st century peyote-fueled vision quest through newly-discovered oceans on Mars, complete with synth swaths, self-ingiting six string space explosions, and a whole bunch of sitar. It’s a jam-packed psych pop odyssey, swishing between a pair of twisting, labyrinthine grooves that’ll have you clinging like a koala to a rocketship.

Take a listen right here and go on a shredtastic voyage!
