Darol Anger and The Furies, Thurs May 16th

An all-star string extravaganza led by fiddle master Darol Anger will be performing at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 7:30pm. Darol has taken acoustic string music into territory which fuses elements of jazz, bluegrass, and other traditions from around the world. He’ll be joined by The Furies, comprised of bluegrass mandolinist Sharon Gilchrist, vocalist Emy Phelps, and Tristan Clarridge, a five-time Grand National Fiddle Champion and cellist who has toured with the neo-acoustic band Crooked Still. Colleen Green May 17th

Self described “stoner punk” Colleen Green is on tour promoting her new album, “Sock it To Me.” I picked up the new record at Streetlight Records over the weekend and the fuzzy, lo-fi scathing guitar, Best Coast lyrics and Vivian Girls style vocals got me screeching along in the car. Best bets to check out are “Only One,” “Time in the World,” and we love “Taxi Driver,” here at KZSC. Grab some munchies and get acquainted with “Sock it To Me” released on Hardly Art or check out her bandcamp! The closest Colleen Green will be to Santa Cruz is Amnesia in San Francisco Friday, May 17th. Showtime is 7 pm.

KZSC presents… The UC Radio Network Conference

KZSC recently hosted the UC Radio Network (UCRN) student broadcaster conference, a mostly harmonic convergence of California college radio stations including KDVS/UC Davis, KALX/UC Berkeley,  KCSB/UC Santa Barbara, Bobcat Radio/UC Merced and others. We’ve never seen so many Warby Parker glasses and Yo La Tengo shirts in one place before. When you get a bunch of radio goobers together, you can only expect them to goober together. Special thanks to guest speakers medial law attorney Michael Couzens, filmmaker Eric Christensen (“The Cover Story: Album Art“), Eva Papp of Spinitron and UCSC Catering. Take a peek at some of the folks who attended and their opinions on how UCRN benefits college radio – which benefits you as a listener. Make sure to watch it in HD (no special glasses needed).

Hapa

Hapa April 27

Prepare to be transported to a tropical paradise in your mind as Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au, collectively known as Hapa, return to Santa Cruz. Hapa founder Barry Flangan provides the shimmering guitar work that infuses all their albums over the years, from the first one simply entitled “HAPA” with co-founder Keli’i Kaneali’i to “In The Name Of Love” which featured a cover of the famous song by U2. Fun Fact: U2 composed “In The Name Of Love” while in Honolulu.  Hapa appears at The Rio Theatre Saturday, April 27th. Showtime is 8 pm. The music also inspires hula, so watch for the graceful beauty.
