Prepare to be transported to a tropical paradise in your mind as Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au, collectively known as Hapa, return to Santa Cruz. Hapa founder Barry Flangan provides the shimmering guitar work that infuses all their albums over the years, from the first one simply entitled “HAPA” with co-founder Keli’i Kaneali’i to “In The Name Of Love” which featured a cover of the famous song by U2. Fun Fact: U2 composed “In The Name Of Love” while in Honolulu. Hapa appears at The Rio Theatre Saturday, April 27th. Showtime is 8 pm. The music also inspires hula, so watch for the graceful beauty.
Everybody’s celebrating Record Store Day, a chance to partake in the time-honored tradition of pawing through bins with fellow music lovers and finding a treasure or three to add to your collection. It started years ago as a campaign to raise awareness about the plight of independent record shops, however Record Store Day is now an international holiday for music fans. Many labels and artists come out with one-of-a-kind items just for the event. In Santa Cruz, you can visit Streetlight Records to experience live music and special items. Men, women and children will be teaming up with Women’s Crisis Support/Defensa de Mujeres to walk a mile and raise awareness about sexual assault in our community. KRS, an acronym for ““Knowledge Reigning Supreme”, has been called the “conscience of Hip Hop” by Rolling Stone magazine and “the spokesperson for Hip Hop” by the street cred publication, Wall Street Journal. With 20 published albums to his credit and his appearances with other artists, KRS-One has literally written the most rhymes in Hip Hop’s history and has been a master teacher for over two decades. Opening for KRS-One will be Ostrich Head; you may remember them from the soundtrack to the video game “Tiger Woods PGA Golf”. An Easter evening of Hip Hop happens at The Golden State Theatre in Monterey March 31st. Showtime is 8 pm.
Traditional and contemporary music from Cape Breton Island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada will be presented by the talented and humorous Mary Jane Lamond and Wendy MacIsaac on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at a House Concert in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 7:30pm. Mary Jane is one of the few remaining Scots Gaelic singers on the island. and has studied and worked to preserve traditional songs in this endangered language. She recorded with fiddler Ashley MacIsaac on his double-platinum selling album. Wendy is an outstanding composer and fiddler of Cape Breton tunes, and has toured with the cutting edge Celtic band Beolach. While Mary Jane and Wendy have had successful solo music careers, they’ve been pals for a long time and recently released a critically acclaimed duo album that even the Huffington Post recognized as “irresistible” and which was also listed on a best of 2012 National Public Radio list.
