Yes, a holiday, a birthday of sorts, for independently owned record stores! Record Store Day was first started in 2008 at Rasputin in SF with a performance by Metallica. Today, it’s a US-wide event that aims to celebrate the little (and big) record stores that keep chugging on, despite the success of online shopping and homogeneous chains specializing in money-making tastes instead of personally loved treasures.
If you live in the Santa Cruz area, both META Music and Streetlight Records are going to be participating. Meta Music will have live DJs all day long and Streetlight Records is having a BBQ in the afternoon, with live bands and DJs all day, including Stellar Corpses at 6pm, Tetherhorse around 5pm, Rodent at 4:30pm and The Pillow Fights at 4pm (you can call or go into Streetlight for a full schedule).
All stores participating in Record Store Day will have limited edition vinyl available for sale. This shit is not available online, not available at Borders, not available at Target and certainly worth a lookout. KZSC personally just received limited edition vinyl from Devo, Bruce Springsteen, Built to Spill, Passion Pit, and Gogol Bordello from our friends at A Man, A Plan, A Canal. There’s some great cover art to be found, including But according to the dude at Streetlight, they’re gonna have dozens of special treats available. So go forth, young ones, and show the curators of your local record stores how much they mean to you!
Very exciting news to report: Matthew and Dorota ie MATADOR are releasing their first record! To celebrate, there will be a big ole shabang at The Church house with performances from Beat Beat Whisper, Pale Robin, and Casey Guitar Band. Oh, and of course the birthday babies. Yum! Come out and support cute people making great music!
For those of you not in Santa Cruz, Matador is going to be taking off on a tour very soon, so if you’re in Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, ETC. you should go see them.
Wu-Tang is back on our hip-hop radar in a big way with numerous kick-ass releases. We started out early summer with Meth and Red’s “Blackout 2″ followed by Raekwon’s bangin sequel, “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2.” In the last week or so, Wu soldiers have unloaded a trove of awaited albums. Meth, Ghost, and Rae’s “Wu Massacre” explodes with crisp reinterpretations of Shaolin classics. Inspectah Deck’s “Manifesto” is a fresh NYC cut rife with tension enhanced by notable appearances from Cormega, Raekwon, and others. If that’s not enough, DJ Mathematics, a formative Wu producer, unleashed “Return of the Wu”, an album of crisply produced remixed favorites from the Staten Island squadron. To celebrate the recent Wu renaissance, the Danger Zone collective is interviewing John “Mook” Gibbons tonight at 10:30p. Mook, an early Wu promoter and manager, pushed soon-to-be classic Wu albums from the early 90′s when the group was still hungry. Mook will be plugging his upcoming “Next 9 Generals of Wu-Tang” competition to be held this summer. Listen in! KZSC aint’ nothin’ to f*#$ wit!
Tonight at the Crepe Place! DJ Passive Theory’s band Acid Tapestries will be playing with 2 other great bands: Worker Bee and Audrye Sessions. Show is at 9pm, doors at 8 and the show costs $10 at the door.
More info here. Come support local bands and catch something new!
The time has come! This Saturday KZSC announced the arrival of it’s Spring pledge drive. This is the time when you can show us how much we mean to you. Your donation means that we can continue to broadcast over the air and through your computer year-round, without commercials, and and without sacrificing our completely original programing.
To show you how much your support means to us, we have bucketloads of goodies to give back to you. Tune in to any of your usual favorite shows to see what they’ve got for you.
For those of you into indie rock, we have SIX of the new Beach House records to give away, “Teen Dream”. The CD comes paired with a DVD that features a video for each of the songs on the album. And, by the way, this album is killer. Read our review here and check out the video to their song “Silver Soul” below.
Shows that may be offering this yummy gift include Flavor of the Week, Dream Scream, and Pop Molecule, all of which are airing tomorrow. On Tuesday check out Get Your Kicks and Pocket Full of Seahorses on Thursday. We also have goodies from the Magnetic Fields, The Album Leaf, Zeus, No Age, and The Apples in Stereo to give away.
