Mention “Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills” to people and you’ll be surprised where the conversation goes. The name for their weekly show is based on the original title of Big Brother and the Holding Company’s first Columbia Records album – not received well by label executives in 1968. In the spirit of the late 60′s and early 70′s, the “Cheap Thrills” staff plays strictly vinyl from The Great 88′s extensive music archives. Turn on your radio (or computer), tune in Wednesdays from 9 AM till noon and drop a line to these valentines at The Great 88. If you dig the San Francisco sound, you’ll love “Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills.”
There’s something in the air beyond the need for that Volkswagen’s smog check. Yes, the road to Valentine’s Day is paved with programming on KZSC. Many of your favorite shows will be paying tribute to Thursday’s holiday with specials focused on amour. Cupid couldn’t be happier. To request a dedication for that Certain Someone or to “heart” your favorite DJ, you can send an instant message to The Great 88 anytime by clicking on the “Chat With The DJ” button on our homepage.

If you ever wanted a visual clue to what is in the mind of a KZSC programmer when they come up with a show title, here it is. This white board hangs in our lobby to show off our schedule for winter 2013. An electronic copy of our program schedule (although not as colorful) can be found on our Schedule & Playlists page. It’s the same place you’ll find music show playlists (some going back to 2005) and direct links to purchase some of the music you hear on The Great 88.
The big wave contest at Mavericks is happening. KZSC will be featuring the return of our surf music program, “Rock Don’t Run” starting on Friday, January 25th. And of course we know surfing came from Hawaii, just like the music you hear on “Wiki Wiki Wednesday”. Our Hawaiian surfing shirt is the best of both worlds, with an aloha KZSC logo on the back. Get yours in our KZSC Brand Store.
Here’s a look at a few of the faces behind the new voices you’ll be hearing on The Great 88 starting January 21st. Our fall quarter broadcasting class came up with programming ideas so hot, we had to have them approved by the campus Fire Department. Besides the difference on the air, significant changes will be happening behind the microphone at KZSC in the year to come. More info as it happens appears on our KZSC Newsletter, along with contests for prizes in each edition. Want to know more about the prizes? Want to know more about KZSC? To celebrate KZSC’s 45th Anniversary, we came up with a special shirt. It’s got a “Flying 45″ record on the front, mid-length grey sleeves plus good ol’ number 45 on the back to remind us of when The Great 88 was just a glimmer in the eye of a few crazy UC Santa Cruz students. It will allow you to remain 45 forever, however the “Flying 45″ shirt won’t last much longer. Click here to get a closer look and order yours.
