Jamaican Independence Day celebrations, Greenhead Park.

Smile Jamaica

August 6th is when Jamaica commemorates their independence as a nation. With a total population of less than 3 million, the tiny island country has provided the world with a disproportionate number influential athletes, artists and music. Ska and reggae originated in Jamaica and are the focus of  several music shows throughout the week on the Great 88: Skallelujah (Fridays at 8:30 pm), Strictly Rockers (Saturday nights at 6:30), All Fruits Ripe and Joy in the Morning (Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9 am). While we enjoy the achievements of Usain Bolt and other Jamaicans during the Olympics on TV, remembering Jamaica’s creative spark and battle for independence through music can be heard on the radio all summer on KZSC.

You Don’t Have To Be Kosher…

Our Program Review Committee wanted to make sure you knew about our weekend program “Musical Jews”. DJ Oy Dog (aka Dylan Music, on the left, with guest Rebecca Stark) has been spinning songs by Jewish artists since he a was a UCSC student many years ago. Hard to imagine Henny Youngman next to Matisyau? Think Yiddish with a twist. Tune in Sundays at 4 pm to find out more on KZSC.

New Student Orientation booth 2012

Welcome To UC Santa Cruz!

KZSC’s spending some quality time outdoors in the sun with, potentially, the next generation of radio mega-stars. July is filled with New Student Orientation events at UCSC; incoming freshmen (and their parents) come to the campus for orientation events and to register for classes. The Great 88 has set up camp to offer up trinkets and information during the day at College 8. If you’re a new UCSC student interested in radio you can contact our Volunteer Coordinator for details or drop by our booth. Parents: to answer your two most frequently asked questions yes, the weather is like this all year and yes, it’s expensive here. Welcome to Santa Cruz.

Great 88 Vacation Postcards

Last summer we asked fans of The Great 88 to send us a postcard while on summer vacation. We received beauties from Scotland, St. Louis, Paris and prison to name just a few of the 50-some exotic locales. Since we’re here and you’re going there, this traveling season KZSC is making the same request. We’ll be posting many of the cards on our website for others to see too. Remember, if your summer plans call for travel anywhere between Finland and Fresno don’t forget to take your favorite station on the go by using our website or  iPhone application and please drop us a line to tell us what we’re missing. We’ll share your card and comments with others on our website.  Mail your postcards to:
