Starting June 18th, KZSC begins our longest programming quarter of the year. Tastier than deep-fried Twinkies, our summer program schedule features the premiere of new folk and bluegrass shows, Brazilian music, film scores and more. And since the days are longer, many of your long-standing favorites have expanded timeslots. Take a peek at the outstanding lineup for June-September on our SCHEDULE page and let us know what you think!
It doesn’t seem that long ago that The Great 88 went from being a perky little 10-watt station that you could barely hear even on campus to the 20,000-watt flamethrower we know and love today. Every now and again we need to upgrade our electronics, power supply and whatever else needs attention (yes, we’ve had to shoo lizards out of some gear) at our antenna site at UCSC; this just happens to be the week.
Beginning June 19th KZSC will be OFF THE AIR for maintenance. WE WILL RETURN THURSDAY (June 21st) AT 4 PM to the lowest spot on the FM dial with a new program schedule. In the meantime you can still listen to our WEB STREAM music mix. Thanks in advance for your understanding; we’ll make it up to you for the rest of the summer.
As many of you know, UC Santa Cruz is home to the Grateful Dead Archive. It represents one of the most significant popular cultural collections of the 20th Century, documenting the Dead’s incredible creative activity and influence in contemporary music history from 1965 to 1995. Head Dead Archivist Nicholas Meriwether recently stopped by KZSC to chat with “Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills” program host DJ Oliver (I’m sure you can guess which is the archivist and which is the student in the picture). Nicholas had great stories about The Dead, the immense work ahead at the archives and amazing tales of music excavation.
