Instead of saying “kiss my bottom”to his critics, Sir Paul tactfully quoted a line from Fats Waller’s 1935 composition, “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter”for the title of his new recording. McCartney’s “Kisses on the Bottom” is a collection of standards he grew up listening to in his childhood along with two new compositions. Some may say that, following Willie Nelson, Rod Stewart, etc. into the world of pop standards is a sign of a shortage of inspiration. Paul says it’s something he’s always wanted to do and he’s brought Eric Clapton and others along for the ride. Form your own opinion as we play selections from the new Paul McCartney next to classic Paul songs Thursday on KZSC’s “Here, There & Everywhere” program from 6-9 AM. Ringo 2012

Being released after the holiday rush is usually a bad idea for musicians but it helps if you’re an icon. The cat named Ringo does as he pleases; no longer signing autographs, “living in the present” and touring/recording whenever the mood strikes. Lucky Beatle fans will get to hear his latest, “Ringo 2012″ on Thursday, February 2nd. Featuring some old skiffle material, a revisit of “Step Lightly” and “Slow Down” from his past alongside new songs, the 17th solo studio record by The Fab Four’s drummer is worth a listen. Tune in to hear from Ringo on the “Here, There & Everywhere” program Thursday, February 2nd starting at 6 AM.

Hawaiian John Cruz gets a chance to visit KZSC during our singer/songwriter “Friday Folk” show this week. He’ll talk about his visit with President Obama, the use of his music on TV’s “Hawaii 5-0″ and of course the craft of writing songs. UCSC’s 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation

World-renowned poet, writer and activist Nikki Giovanni will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation. Still committed to the struggle for civil rights and equality today, her talk will cover “The Privilege of Serving: Art and the Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr”. The event takes place Thursday, February 2nd at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public with doors opening at 6:30 pm. If you can’t make it there in person you can hear exclusive live coverage of UCSC’s 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation on KZSC beginning at 7 pm.

Year of the Dragon

2012 is the Chinese New Year of the Dragon. In Eastern philosophy, the Dragon is said to be a free spirit of the zodiac, a deliverer of good fortune with restrictions blowing out the creative spark that is always ready to flame into life. Sounds a lot like The Great 88. This month KZSC will be showing off our new program schedule for 2012, and we think it’s going to be hot. Beatle Guests Thursday

Any hard-core Beatle fan would love to take the walk across one of the most famous intersections in music history – the same place The Fab Four had their Abbey Road cover picture taken. The Peironnet family (Simone following her dad William) did this recently and will be special guests on this week’s “Here, There & Everywhere” program. Putting their heads together, they’ve come up with some interesting musical requests. Please make them welcome, add your Beatles faves to their list and tune in between 6 and 9 AM Thursday on KZSC.
