Here we go, it’s fall! The Talk Programming Department has gathered its minions and we are ready to attack–or rather, occupy the airwaves with quality pieces. Look out for The Cruz Report, the Talk Programming collective Tuesday nights 8-8:30pm. Six of us DJ’s will be taking turns throughout the quarter to host the show and air pieces with the shared theme of local news and events. Our audience can expect interviews with professors, performances by local musicians, audio from local events, and even sound collages. Because there are so many of us in the collective, each Tuesday night will be packed with interesting information from a student perspective. The Cruz Report fits in right after Bruce Bratton’s Universal Grapevine, so keep the dial set to 88.1 when you hear those dudes from Creedence Clearwater Revival singing about grapes!
As KZSC’s Public Service Announcement Director I receive piles of emails every day. Just like tofu, the easier your submission is to digest, the faster you’ll hear it on the air. Here are some of the basic points when sending notices:
General newsletters about your organization more often than not just get deleted. Since we want to represent you/your org in the best way possible, a specific announcement or event is much more likely to receive attention. Announcements can’t contain price information. Instead of including prices, please add some contact information you won’t mind sharing with the public. This way people can find out pricing, driving directions, etc. directly from you. What we refer to as “calls to action” – phrases like, “come on down!” or “get it while it’s hot!” (even if it is hot) will not be included in your PSA. And last but most obvious, the sooner you send your announcement, the more air time it could get! If you submit t a PSA less than two weeks before your event, it may not even be broadcast at all. What did mom always say about planning ahead? I love helping spread the word about the wide range of events and activities in our community, so help me help you make your announcement stand out. If you have any questions, email me at: email@example.com.
Just in time for Halloween, KZSC has carved out a fall program schedule. New shows that are scary good; old shows still hanging around as a treat. No tricks; just great, hand-made radio broadcasts home grown at UC Santa Cruz on The Great 88. Check our Program/Schedule page to peek at the week ahead or just tune in for surprises on The Great 88 every day.
As the fall academic quarter begins, UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal will offer observations, updates and progress reports regarding our campus at his annual “State of the Campus” address. KZSC will have live coverage today beginning at 3 pm. You’ll also be able to hear a rebroadcast in its entirety Wednesday, September 26th at 7 pm, directly after the KPFA News on KZSC.
On-line listeners to The Great 88 know we’ve been having some webstream problems lately, but everything looks like it’s back to normal now…whatever that is. Thank you to the many hands and minds who worked weekends and evenings to solve the leaks in our streams. If you are experiencing any new problems, please CONTACT US.
Besides wolfing down the pretzels, bratwurst and beverages, KZSC celebrates the month of October as only we can-by changing our program schedule. Gone are the long summer days, the hours at the beach and sand fleas. Now come the early evenings, long pants and lederhosen plus new programs hosted by UCSC students. Yes, many of your old favorites will still pour out of the radio as well. To find out more, keep an eye on our website and an ear to The Great 88 as we toast our new Fall Program Schedule beginning Monday, October 8th. Cheers!
