Dirty Talk?

At the moment KZSC does not air any “dirty talk” shows-in the sexual sense, but we have had a few sex talk shows in our past. My point is not all talk programming is news, sports or so-called “public affairs”. Talk Programming can be interviews, conversations, lectures, stories, field recordings or (my favorite at the moment) even spoken word and poetry. KZSC’s new Talk Programming department has been riding on the spoken word train this summer. Our  station Librarian has taken it upon himself to sort our spoken word vinyl archives and has unearthed some gems. Ginsberg, Burroughs, Giovanni; children’s stories; African folk tales and more. We’re always on the lookout for more provocative talks and poignant poetry so with the help of the Internet, I present to you some “dirty talk” by the wonderfully talented poet Rives:

Keep your ears open for different styles of “talk” on The Great 88 this fall!

Art Garfunkel Friday

Not just “the other half” of the famous duet, Art Garfunkel is an accomplished poet, producer, actor and a singer with a wide range of work that spans five decades and more. Artie has a new career-spanning CD compilation just released and to celebrate, The Great  88 will air “Art Garfunkel: The Singer”, a one-hour radio special during our “Test of Time” program on Friday. Tune in starting at noon on KZSC.

Janis Joplin Performing at Monterey Pop Festival

Monterey Pop Monday

It was known as “The Summer of Love”. 1967 introduced a sea change in popular culture around the country and the world. About an hour south of Santa Cruz, musicians that became rock royalty appeared at the Monterey International Pop Festival. The Great 88 looks back on how young people, artists and performers like Jimi, Janis, Otis and The Who came to California’s Central Coast and made music history that summer 45 years ago. Were you there? You’ll feel like it Monday morning starting at 6 AM on  KZSC-FM.

Cash

Johnny Cash Special Saturday

Set your alarm early Saturday morning to hear a special honoring Johnny Cash. “The Man in
Black” recorded some of the greatest early rock & roll records for the Sun label, followed by more hits for Columbia as a country star. You’ll learn the truth about some of Johnny’s #1 Hits and have a chance to win a copy of the newly release “Number Ones” compilation. Your Wednesday aloha DJ Lani B. will gallop roaring out the chute at 6 am this Saturday as we whoop ‘n holler with Cash in hand on KZSC.

Jamaican Independence Day celebrations, Greenhead Park.

Smile Jamaica

August 6th is when Jamaica commemorates their independence as a nation. With a total population of less than 3 million, the tiny island country has provided the world with a disproportionate number influential athletes, artists and music. Ska and reggae originated in Jamaica and are the focus of  several music shows throughout the week on the Great 88: Skallelujah (Fridays at 8:30 pm), Strictly Rockers (Saturday nights at 6:30), All Fruits Ripe and Joy in the Morning (Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9 am). While we enjoy the achievements of Usain Bolt and other Jamaicans during the Olympics on TV, remembering Jamaica’s creative spark and battle for independence through music can be heard on the radio all summer on KZSC.
