“I play music that is the accidental result of Colonial exploitation.” That’s how Bob Brozman described his sound. Not unlike other ethnomusicologists such as Ry Cooder, Bob dug deep into the cultural understanding (or misunderstandings) of what is often called “world music” today. He exposed many to the sonic capabilities of the National steel guitar and is one of the better-known musicians to come from Santa Cruz. At an afternoon garden party decades ago, he shared with me the secret to ridding your yard of gophers (it involves beer). For his music, his humor and his gardening help, I continue to thank him. Bob Brozman passed away at age 59 on April 24th.
If the entire city of Gridley in Butte County voted for KZSC it would be impressive, however an equal amount of ballots came in to the Santa Cruz Good Times during their 2013 “Best Of” voting. With over 6,500 votes cast, the people of Santa Cruz (and possibly Gridley) have spoken. “Best Radio Station” honors went to The Great 88. To those who voted for KZSC, we thank you for your good taste. Keep listening while we polish our gold star.

The readers of Santa Cruz Weekly have spoken. After all the ballots have been counted, The Great 88 was once again named “Best Radio Station” and KZSC’s Sleepy John Sandidge was named “Best Radio Personality”. Thank you to all who helped us repeat once again as Number One. We appreciate the recognition and the 2013 Gold Award; in fact we’re thinking of having it bronzed…
KZSC made some technical adjustments recently to our broadcast signal at 88.1 FM. If we did our math right, some of you are hearing us for the first time. So whether our radio waves are being picked up on your dental fillings or with the aid of that rusty coat hanger which replaced your car radio antenna years ago or even if you’re streaming us live on a new smart phone, we’d like to introduce ourselves. We’re The Great 88, KZSC in Santa Cruz and we’re glad to have you along for the ride. Explore our Program Schedule and see what you’ve been missing!
In 1967 Andy Warhol produced the famous yellow banana sticker cover for The Velvet Underground & Nico’s album with “peel slowly and see” printed near the tip. Those who did remove the banana skin found a pink, peeled banana beneath. Since UC Santa Cruz is home to the Banana Slugs and KZSC, we thought this would be a cool tribute to the Underground and the year broadcasting spawned as an underground activity at UCSC. The Velvet Banana joins a bunch of other KZSC brand products on our Shop Site; available in all sizes.
