The 23rd Annual International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards show was held several weeks ago, and KZSC will feature highlights from this show on Backroads, between 12-2pm on Sunday, November 4, 2012. Recorded live at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, Laurie Lewis and Del McCoury co-host this year’s show that includes performances by Laurie with Tom Rozum & Bryan Sutton, Dale Ann Bradley with Pam Tillis, Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Boxcars, Blue Highway, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Dailey & Vincent and others. Tune in for the special live performances, including tributes to Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs, coupled with lots of thank yous from the award winners.
Peter Mulvey, singer-songwriter and guitarist currently based in Milwaukee, will be visiting the “Backroads” folk show on KZSC for a live interview on Sunday, April 22, 2012 between 12-2pm. He’ll be in concert at 7pm that evening at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA. While Peter is well known for his thoughtful songwriting, his new CD ”The Good Stuff” released a few weeks ago, puts his stamp on classic works from a variety of folks, including Duke Ellington, Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Chris Smither, and Thelonious Monk.
Hear Mokai live on KZSC during our folk show Backroads this Sunday 2/20/11 between noon and 2pm, for a sample of what to expect at the first songwriter night of the year in Corralitos later that day. “An Evening of Songs and Stories” starts at the family-friendly time of 6:00pm at the Corralitos Cultural Center (in front of the library), 127 Hames Rd., Watsonville, CA. Three performers will be featured, sharing stories and their original music: Michelle Chappel, former psychology professor at UCSC who ditched academia to pursue a singing career; Michael Gaither, the host of the Songwriters In-The-Round series, an always entertaining local songwriter; and Mokai, a singer accompanying himself with folk and blues style guitar fingerpicking.
Michael Gaither, local singer-songwriter, is live RIGHT NOW on KZSC’s Backroads program. He’s a writer of entertaining and often humorous songs that reflect on everyday experiences. Tune in until 2 pm to catch the performance and interview.
Michael will also be performing in “An Evening of Songs and Stories: Three Songwriters In-The-Round” with Nancy Cassidy and Jay Howlett at the Corralitos Cultural Center, 127 Hames Road, Corralitos later tonight at 6 pm. More info at (831) 254-2669.
The Santa Cruz Bluegrass Society presents the 24th Annual Santa Cruz Bluegrass Fair this Saturday, May 1, Noon-5:00pm at the Duck Pond Stage in San Lorenzo Park, downtown Santa Cruz. This free event kicks off International Bluegrass Month (May) featuring performances by five bands (Harmony Grits, Mountain Drive, Down Beets, Family Hogwash, Faux Renwah) and plenty of space for jamming. Bring instruments, a lawn chair or blanket, a hat and sunscreen. Bluegrass music is featured regularly at KZSC on Backroads, Sundays noon-2pm.
Mary McCaslin and Steve Palazzo will be playing live on Backroads from Noon-2pm this coming Sunday, April 11. Mary is a folk singer extraordinaire (and former KZSC DJ!) and has returned home to Santa Cruz after completing a national tour. She’ll be joined by Steve Palazzo, local flatpicking guitar guru and singer with the bluegrass band Homefire. They’re both participating in the Fiddling Cricket Acoustic music series at The Ugly Mug in Soquel next week.
