Special Consensus, the mighty four-person acoustic bluegrass band from the Chicago area, will be in concert Tuesday, January 24th, 2012, 7:30pm at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA, performing songs from their CD “35,” named after the band’s 35th anniversary, and more. While band members have changed over the decades, they’re still led by ace banjo player Greg Cahill. Opening the show will be local Santa Cruz favorites Bean Creek, who play and sing early country, old-time and bluegrass music with lots of heart and exuberance.

Jim Malcolm Wed Jan 25th

Scottish singer-songwriter Jim Malcolm will be performing at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA on Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Former lead singer of the well-respected band Old Blind Dogs, Jim has been touring the world with his guitar and harmonicas, singing the traditional songs of Scotland along with his own originals. He’s a master interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns, and this evening will also be a celebration of the 253rd anniversary of the birthday of Scotland’s national poet. Opening will be local Celtic music artists Deby Benton Grosjean (fiddle) and Shelley Phillips (harp, woodwinds). Presented by the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay.

Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton, Wed Jan 18th

From chilly Minnesota comes Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton to the Backstage Lounge (next to the Rio Theatre) in Santa Cruz, CA on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 8:30pm. A true master of the much maligned squeeze box, Dan’s repertoire covers a wide swath of original and traditional material, including influences of Gypsy Swing, French Musette, Cajun, Jug Band, Tex-Mex and the Cumbia, A frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” Dan’s shows feature not only his brilliant accordion work, but his humor and songs in a dizzying variety of musical genres. He also performs with a larger band, the Café Accordion Orchestra, but on this visit is appearing solo in an intimate venue.

Molly’s Revenge Wed, Jan 4th

Molly’s Revenge is a Monterey Bay Area four-person acoustic Celtic band that will be undergoing change soon, as they say farewell to one of their founding members after some 10 years. Pete Haworth, the bouzouki playing lead vocalist, will be performing for the last time in Molly’s Revenge on Wed, Jan 4, 2012 at 7:30pm at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA. The rest of the band includes David Brewer (pipes, whistles, bodhran), John Weed (fiddle), and Stuart Mason (guitar, mandola). The show is officially sold out, but some standing room tickets may be available. Presented by the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay.

Kevin Burke Wed Dec 7th

Irish fiddle master Kevin Burke will be appearing in a solo concert Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 7:30pm at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA. A proponent of the fluid and beautifully ornamented County Sligo style, Kevin has been the fiddling mainstay of several seminal Irish groups, including The Bothy Band and Patrick Street. Now residing in Portland, Oregon, Kevin was awarded a prestigious National Heritage Fellowship in 2002, a lifetime honor acknowledging his work in support of Irish American folk music. Kevin has a fairly dry wit, and his concerts are punctuated by his humor and some singing besides his great fiddling. Presented by the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay. And be sure to tune in on Thursdays, 2-4pm for KZSC’s traditional Celtic music show “The Lucky Clover.”

The Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band will be performing an afternoon concert at the Digital Media Factory in Santa Cruz, CA on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 4:00pm. You can be part of the audience for this concert to be filmed in HD for later TV and internet broadcast as part of the Santa Cruz Live series. Peter Rowan is a Grammy award winning singer, songwriter and guitar player with deep ties to traditional bluegrass, having toured as part of Bill Monroe’s band early in his career. His talented band also includes Michael Witcher (dobro), Keith Little (banjo) and Paul Knight (bass).

Wake the Dead Sunday Dec 4th

The Wake the Dead band who are mostly from the SF Bay Area, blends traditional Celtic music played on acoustic instruments with the songs of the Grateful Dead. They’ll be performing at The Chautauqua Hall, 162 16th St., Pacific Grove, CA (408) 847-6982 on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 7pm. The band includes Danny Carnahan, a singer, fiddler, and player of just about anything with frets, and a two-time NAIRD (National Association of Independent Record Distributors) “Indie” award winner, Sylvia Herold, guitarist and amazing singer, Paul Kotapish, tasty and talented mandolin and guitar player and occasional vocalist, Kevin Carr, singer, fiddler, whistle & pipes player, Maureen Brennan featured on harp, Cindy Browne on bass, and Brian Rice on percussion. Three Metre Day Live on Backroads Nov 6th

Sonic explorers Three Metre Day from Toronto will be visiting KZSC for a live interview during the Backroads show on Sunday, Nov 6, 2011 between noon and 2pm. Three Metre Day’s original compositions are highly textural in nature, blending folk and jazz elements and their debut CD “Coasting Notes” was released a few days ago. The band includes Don Rooke (guitars), Michelle Willis (vocals and pump organ), and Hugh Marsh (violin, keyboards). They’ll be performing at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, CA at 7:30pm that Sunday evening.

Battlefield Band Nov. 2nd

Coming all the way from Scotland, The Battlefield Band will be in concert Wednesday, November 2 at Don Quixote’s in Felton. Founded in 1969 and named for the “Battlefield” area of Glasgow, the band has been on the international scene for four decades. They pioneered the integration of bagpipes with fiddle, keyboards, guitar and voice, mixing old songs with newly composed material. The band won the first Scots Traditional Music Award as “Best Live Act” and are celebrating the release of their latest CD “Line-Up”. Current band members include the newest recruit Ewen Henderson (fiddle, highland pipes, small pipes, vocals, piano), Mike Katz (highland pipes, small pipes, whistles, bouzouki, guitar, bass), Alasdair White (fiddle, whistle, bouzouki, highland and small pipes), and Sean O’Donnell (vocals, guitar). Presented by the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay. The Battlefield Band take the stage Wednesday night at 7:30.

Bluegrass Music Awards Show on Backroads, Sun Oct 23rd

The 22nd Annual International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards show was held a few weeks ago, and KZSC will feature highlights from this show on Backroads, between 12-2pm on Sunday, October 23, 2011. Recorded live at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, Sam Bush hosts the show that includes performances by Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Gibson Brothers, The Grascals, The Boxcars, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver with J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams, Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, Balsam Range, Del McCoury, George Shuffler and others. Tune in for the special live performances coupled with lots of thank yous from the award winners.
