An all-star string extravaganza will be led by fiddler Darol Anger at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA on Sunday, August 19th, 2012 starting at 7pm. Darol has been pushing the envelope of modern American string music by combining elements of bluegrass, jazz, and world music traditions into his compositions. He has played with the David Grisman Quintet, The Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss, the Republic of Strings and other ensembles, and taught at the Berklee College of Music. He’s touring this time with the Furies, which includes Rushad Eggleston (cello), Maeve Gilchrist (harp), Sharon Gilchrist (mandolin), Emy Phelps (guitar, vocals), and Nic Gareiss (foot percussion).
From the soggy town of Seattle comes Pasatempo, a band specializing in old-style music from the Greek underworld, known as “Rebetika” along with other music from the Balkans. They’ll be in concert at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA on Thursday, July 19th, 2012 at 7:30pm. Led by the husband and wife team of Christos Govetas (vocals, bouzouki and baglama) and Ruth Hunter (vocals, accordion and former member of the Santa Cruz Balkan band Medna Usta) the ensemble also includes Dave Bartley (guitar), Hank Bradley (“The Poison Coyote Kid” on bouzouki), Steve Ramsay (baglama) and Bill Lanphier (double bass) for that wall of emotional sound reflecting the full gamut of sorrow and joy.
The Celtic duo of Aaron Jones & Claire Mann will be in concert on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 7:30pm at Don Quixote’s in Felton, CA. Aaron is the singer, bouzouki and guitar player in the popular band “Old Blind Dogs” and a recipient of an “Instrumentalist of the Year” award for Scottish Traditional Music. Claire is also a singer, and has received multiple All-Ireland Champion awards on flute and tin whistle, as well as being an outstanding fiddler. As a duo, they’ve toured together for years, delighting audiences with a mix of traditional and original Scottish and Irish music and song. Presented by The Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay.
