Very exciting news to report: Matthew and Dorota ie MATADOR are releasing their first record! To celebrate, there will be a big ole shabang at The Church house with performances from Beat Beat Whisper, Pale Robin, and Casey Guitar Band. Oh, and of course the birthday babies. Yum! Come out and support cute people making great music!

For those of you not in Santa Cruz, Matador is going to be taking off on a tour very soon, so if you’re in Nebraska, Iowa, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, ETC. you should go see them.

Big news for UC students: Dani, host of Lost Minds and Found Sound, is going to be throwing a gaggle of free shows on campus next quarter. This is supppppper exciting for us and for you. And thanks to our secondary audio stream, we’ll be able to broadcast all of that goodness from us directly to you!
The first show is going to be January 16th at 7pm. Details are coming up, but we can tell you that LITTLE TEETH are going to be playing. Check their space: http://www.myspace.com/littleteethmusic. I’ve been a big fan of Little Teeth for quite a while now, so this is suuuuper exciting. I saw them play in NY (remember this?) and they were wonderful, so please, if you’re student, plan on making this!

Yes yes yes, Like This!

Number ONE: The famoussss Annual KZSC Ultimate Music Sale is going on from 10-3pm and it is going to be nuts. There will be dozens of different vendors here to sell you wonderful musics, we will be there to sell you TWENTY FIVE CENT CDs (not to mention the bizarre LPs lurking around) and all of it’s to help benefit this wonderful little non-profit radio station. What’s not to love? Come early for all the bests, bring your car up and take advantage of the free parking, and get digging. We’ll help you to find a bargain and to help us. Yum!

The event begins at 10am and runs through to 3pm. It takes place at the Crown/Merrill Cultural Center at UCSC. For more info please email cdsale@kzsc.org

And THEN, keep your music loving pants on because Santa Cruz’s very own This Is Not a Record Label (really, it’s not) is throwing This is Not a Mikrofest II. What’s that mean? It means amazing show after amazing show after amazing show. The fun begins immediately after the music sale and continues until the wee hours of the night. The full line-up is listed after the jump. While normally I’d point you in the direction of all my faves, I think “my faves” is kind of useless in this situation. Really, all these shows will be worth it. However, I will say that I have a huge personal crush on the anti-folk sweetness of Polka Dot Dot Dot (the beloved Jordan O’ Jordan is a member). And that Matador will never cease to be a KZSC favorite.

How to perform outdoors

This past Sunday was an exciting day for a few of us music-loving adventurers. There was an outdoor afternoon show at the Crystal Palace (our friends listed in the title) followed by a ridiculously fun show at the RC4NV (Ty Segall, Green Flash and Hermit Convention). Tromping through town with a musical suntan is just the right thing for the end of summer.

Lucky for you, if you missed any of the local music goodness, you can hear Dane Terry and Jordan O’ Jordan tonight on Pocket Full of Manatees. These lovely guys were nice enough to come by our wooded station before their show and hang out and play some tunes. The whole interview airs tonight at 8pm followed by the best in new indie rock. So what’ve you got to lose? Make a date with the Great 88! (jesus that was cheesy, and I apologize, but that is a fabulous, fabulous rhyme!)

And in case you’re not totally sold by my cheese ball pitching (it’s okay, I’m not offended), I could probably tell you what these guys sound like. Jordan O’ Jordan is from Olympia, WA and is a part of Polka Dot Dot Dot. Unfamiliar with both? Jordan is part of the wonderful, friendly DIY folk scene that is making Olympia sound like some sort of magic lush land of glittering music.

Dane Terry is from Ohio (he travelled all this way for us, gee!) and plays some creepy tunes that sound like they belong in a twisted musical on his gigantic keyboard and sings with along with his gigantic voice. (The best song is called Telephant and is about a genetic experiment that put a television where an elephant’s head should go and airs unbiased news if you feed it).
