KZSC Governing Board

Passing the Torch

Every year for KZSC comes the bittersweet moment of our old governing board stepping down and being replaced by their mentees. Tonight is night that this transition completes. Know that regardless of this transition KZSC is and will always be committed to community radio and giving you, the audience, the best possible experience we can. For the most part this new governing board has been blogging their way into your hearts already, so the transition may have seamlessly slipped by. So on behalf of all the KZSC staff and I (your “new” new media director), welcome to another fun year of noncommercial radio and feel free to let us know how we’re doing!

Labeling Music

DJs at The Great 88 often mention having anxiety dreams where they are in the broadcast studio trying to play a record on the air only to find there’s nothing on it. A desperate attempt to find something else typically has one waking up screaming in a cold sweat (not the James Brown song). Yes, for DJs it’s worse than the “underwear in class” nightmare. With over 70,000 CDs and who knows how many 7″ records and LPs, finding anything in the KZSC music archives can be problematic. Can there be a way to make order out of this chaos? The answer is yes.  Here’s How We Do It; thanks to website to Radio Survivor for the article about our MUSIC LIBRARY.

If you have about two minutes, here’s a quick tour inside a portion of the KZSC music vault.

Story Time 5/19/2013

On May 19th, the Kinetic Poetics Project bunch joined us in the air room for a good thirty minutes of slam poetry and rhymes. You can check out KPP by clicking on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/KineticPoeticsProject

During the second half of the show, Cabrillo Professor, writer, and theater artist, Helene Simkin Jara, read a few poems from her book of collection of poems, Because I Had To, as well as her short story, “Josefina”.

Her book is up online for purchase in Amazon!

All of the cats at KZSC have been enjoying a huge influx of the finest jazz in lieu of the recent JAM (Jazz Appreciation Month) of April. Now that April has ended, the fun hasn’t stopped in May and we continue to recieve tons of titles from our promoters!

Here, some of the most popular plays are listed:

Among these is a very talented artist recently featured here at KZSC, and goes by the name Sarah Elizabeth Charles. Emerging from the vibrant jazz scene of New York City and producing through Truth Revolution Records, Sarah recently completed a tour of the west coast going through Seattle, San Francisco, Berkeley AND she even came up to our lovely little KZSCabin in the woods! Her recent recording of the album “RED” with her quartet is certainly something worth listening to. We completed a studio interview last week, which should air on my show Stirrin’ the Soup on Thursday 2-4pm.
Sarah has already played some of the greatest venues in NYC, including Dizzy’s, the Blue Note and the Iridium. Her expression doesn’t stop at RED- I’m told that there is more to look forward to the end of this year and the the following. As usual, the jazz/blues department at KZSC is committed to keeping things fresh…We are receiving nothing but the newest recordings from all over the country and we want to spin them for YOU!
