After a long wait, the much-anticipated takeover of music and arts comes to Downtown Santa Cruz this weekend at Santa Cruz Music Festival 2019. With 10+ venues and over 200 artists scheduled to play, there’s guaranteed a good time anywhere you go. To help you narrow organize your schedule this year, I’ve selected 4 events to not miss this year for SCMF.

  1. San Lorenzo Park – House & Techno Takeover

-If you’re looking for your house and techno fix this weekend and a good area to boogie your heart out, look no further to San Lorenzo Park. There, you’ll be able to find a stacked lineup with legendary artists like Mikey Lion, Lubelski, and Christian Martin bumping the sound from 1-6 PM both Saturday and Sunday. There’s planned to be a BBQ, Art Installations from the Playa, an open bar, and tons of green, open space to dance (cartwheel if you like) during the day to get your energy going for the night. It is a breath of fresh air to take in in alternatives to all the inside venues being offered this year. Weather is looking nice this weekend, so bust out your sun hats and funky pants for Desert Hearts!

  1. Lost Dogz Takeover at the Catalyst Atrium

-On Saturday, there is planned to be endless amounts of eclectic electronic music music to fill your ears with bass throughout the night. If you’re looking for the cream of the crop, my suggested destination would be to check out the Lost Dogz Takeover at the Catalyst Atrium (7pm-12am). Taking over festivals one set at a time, this collective’s rapidly growing fanbase proves just how profound their style is, bringing bass music up from the underground, but still keeping its sound. Even more impressive that all of them are in their 20s, songs like “Take A Sip” by Sumthin Sumthin and “Sooped” by Eazybaked (off their new EP “Off The Chain” – https://soundcloud.com/lostdogz/sets/off-the-chain-1),  just go to show their place on this lineup – one to definitely spark your weird and wonky music taste

  1. Dela Moontribe b2b Spacegeisha at MOTIV (Saturday 6-8pm)

-One aspect I like about this year’s lineup is the whopping presence of female artists on the lineup, coming from all over the country. Delamoontribe is the definition of femme fatale, known for her unique sound mixing elements of drum ‘n’ bass, techno, tribal-inspired rhythmic elements, and even glitch hop into her music. With support of Bay Area’s own spacegeishA, their set is bound to transport you out of this dimension and into another. Together, their music showcases how electronic music defies boundaries every day, but can still keep a groove to get down to. (Check out Dela Moon’s set from Lightining in a Bottle – https://soundcloud.com/delamoonmusic/dela-moon-lightning-in-a-bottle-2019-at-the-stacks).

  1. The Funk Hunters’ set at The Civic Auditorium (Sunday 8:45-9:45 PM)

-After a long day spent partaking in a party anthem, it can sometimes feel like a mission to find something that can keep the high energy going into the rest of the night. To that, I give you: The Funk Hunters. Their fusion of old-school hip-hop, heavy bass, and of course classic funk, their sound is bound to cater to a whole range of audiences no matter your music taste. They have lately been taking the world by storm appearing at festivals like Electric Forest, Lightning in a Bottle, Coachella, and Burning Man (they even dressed up as Daft Punk one year and fooled everyone on the Playa), and will most likely bump up the party at SCMF this year. (Check out my personal fave track by them – https://soundcloud.com/thefunkhunters/party-rockin?in=thefunkhunters/sets/typecast).

With the overwhelming (and exciting) amount of content available at SCMF, it’s awesome to see our very own Downtown be able to have this experience to bring together locals and visitors to dance to the tunes of all genres. Besides music, there’s also a plethora of workshops, food, vendors, and art installations there for your pleasure all weekend long!
