UCSC Students: The Boardwalk Frolic is exclusive event for you. Come meet other students and join KZSC DJs on Monday, September 23 as we provide the soundtrack for the first bash of the new school year. Transportation from campus is free! The music starts at 6 pm and has been extended this year until 10:30 at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Tickets may be purchased online between now and September 11th. You can pre-pay for your tickets in person at the Bay Tree Bookstore. Stop by the KZSC sound booth and say hi. KZSC will also have a booth at the OPERS Fall Fest September 24th.
KZSC prides itself on being a community based radio station, and boy are we excited to welcome in our new members of the Santa Cruz community! That’s right, a fresh batch of UCSC Banana Slugs will be moving onto campus within the week! In order to give our new members a proper welcome to the campus, KZSC will be hosting an information booth at the OPERS Fall festival on September 24th located on the OPERS field on UCSC’s campus. The festival will take place from 3 – 6 pm. The festival is centered around the incoming students, but community members are welcome as well!
Keep a look out for the Great 88 while pursuing the amazing amount of resources and clubs/activities available through UCSC’s campus.
Porter College student Annais Rittenberg joined The Great 88 as program host of “Cajun Spice”, a program devoted to the sounds of New Orleans back in 2010. Her passion for music from other cultures quickly led to serving a term as KZSC’s World Music Director and hosting another show “Global Grooves”. She was a bright spirit with lots to offer new volunteers when they came to the station. Annais passed away July 3rd while working as a children’s summer camp counselor. It’s a great loss to our staff and our listening audience. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.
This Friday KZSC will have its plug pulled. As part of a larger electrical project, UC Santa Cruz needs to temporarily cut power to our little cabin in the woods. That means zero webstream signal and a blank spot at 88.1 FM for a while…but not too long. We will go dark (literally) at noon on Friday, June 21st and expect to be back bothering the world again sometime around 6 pm Friday night.
You’re probably listening to KZSC in an Internet cloud right now, but some people still cling to their radios. For those used to hearing The Great 88 at 88. FM, you should know that UC Santa Cruz is doing some electrical upgrades today at our broadcast tower location. We continue to bring music and more into your smart phones, tablets and computers but as far as your radio goes, it will need to wait until around 11 AM today. Thanks for your understanding and for missing us on the dial…
KZSC recently hosted the UC Radio Network (UCRN) student broadcaster conference, a mostly harmonic convergence of California college radio stations including KDVS/UC Davis, KALX/UC Berkeley, KCSB/UC Santa Barbara, Bobcat Radio/UC Merced and others. We’ve never seen so many Warby Parker glasses and Yo La Tengo shirts in one place before. When you get a bunch of radio goobers together, you can only expect them to goober together. Special thanks to guest speakers medial law attorney Michael Couzens, filmmaker Eric Christensen (“The Cover Story: Album Art“), Eva Papp of Spinitron and UCSC Catering. Take a peek at some of the folks who attended and their opinions on how UCRN benefits college radio – which benefits you as a listener. Make sure to watch it in HD (no special glasses needed).
