Every year for KZSC comes the bittersweet moment of our old governing board stepping down and being replaced by their mentees. Tonight is night that this transition completes. Know that regardless of this transition KZSC is and will always be committed to community radio and giving you, the audience, the best possible experience we can. For the most part this new governing board has been blogging their way into your hearts already, so the transition may have seamlessly slipped by. So on behalf of all the KZSC staff and I (your “new” new media director), welcome to another fun year of noncommercial radio and feel free to let us know how we’re doing!
You’re probably listening to KZSC in an Internet cloud right now, but some people still cling to their radios. For those used to hearing The Great 88 at 88. FM, you should know that UC Santa Cruz is doing some electrical upgrades today at our broadcast tower location. We continue to bring music and more into your smart phones, tablets and computers but as far as your radio goes, it will need to wait until around 11 AM today. Thanks for your understanding and for missing us on the dial…
From left to right, here are the Ilyn sisters: Natasha, Samantha and Tatianna. This is a KZSC first: two siblings on our Governing Board at the same time. Natasha was elected into the Promotions Director position (handling ticket & swag giveaways) and Tatianna will be our new Design Director (stickers, shirts and other goodies). Sadly, we couldn’t make it a trio; Samantha is only 17 and came by to visit her sisters at The Great 88. Who knows? It could be all Ilyn, all the time in 2014 at KZSC!
The brutal truth is this: there’s a lot of stuff in your life that needs to get moved out the door and down the road and KZSC is no exception. We have a fantastic music collection that has grown (or groan!) over four decades. But this also means that there are quite a few records that are warped, cracked, chipped, badly scratched or just plain worn out. My mission is to go through our library album by album and send the broken ones to vinyl heaven. They’ve been hiding in the shadows long enough and with shelf space at a premium I have to pull them all. So keep your eyes open at our Annual Music Sale coming in November…we promise an exceptional amount of vinyl for sale cheap. Plus you may come across some cool album covers-even if the LP is a little worse for wear.
If our spring program schedule were in a bakery, we’d be headed for the day-old discount bin soon. Hard to imagine that spring is already winding down, but there are a scant six weeks or so left before thoughts of graduation, summer vacations and doing laundry will become reality. Take the time to explore some of the new shows on The Great 88 while you can including a wide variety of late-night offerings. And if you like rockin’ to your old favorites, make sure you let us know.
See the complete current spring lineup on our Schedule Page and unwind with KZSC.
“I play music that is the accidental result of Colonial exploitation.” That’s how Bob Brozman described his sound. Not unlike other ethnomusicologists such as Ry Cooder, Bob dug deep into the cultural understanding (or misunderstandings) of what is often called “world music” today. He exposed many to the sonic capabilities of the National steel guitar and is one of the better-known musicians to come from Santa Cruz. At an afternoon garden party decades ago, he shared with me the secret to ridding your yard of gophers (it involves beer). For his music, his humor and his gardening help, I continue to thank him. Bob Brozman passed away at age 59 on April 24th.
